What is a gear motor and for which hydraulic application do you need it?

There are three different types of hydraulic gear motors. The external gear motor, which is very similar in design to the external gear pump, is a high speed motor. The epicyclic gear motor, also known as an orbit or gear ring motor, is a low speed hydraulic motor generating high torques at low speeds. The other hydraulic gear motor type is the internal gear motor, which is very similar in design to the internal gear pump, is suitable for special fluids.

Gear motors are hydraulic motors with a wide range of speeds from gerotor motor to internal gear motor.

Hydraulic gear motors are often used in mobile hydraulics and in agricultural machinery to drive conveyer belts, screw conveyors, dispersion plates or fans. The hydraulic gear motor has few moving parts, works smoothly, and operates very well at medium to high pressure while maintaining a high speed. Depending on model the hydraulic gear motor forms displacement chamber with one or more rotating gear wheels.
